Paper Cutting like Henri Matisse's late work
Please watch the following video about Matisse's life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob8FWxrKVZY

Matisse, as an older man, started to do paper cuttings and made a book called Jazz containing them. Many of his paper cuttings were about the circus. We are doing paper cuttings inspired by Matisse.
You will need to integrate the following requirements:
- The theme of your paper cutting should be about the circus, entertainment, folklore, or travel. It should be joyful, like Matisse.
- Use bright colors, and a little white and black to "pop" the bright colors.
- Your design should be as simple as possible (this is difficult!)
- The background should have large geometric shapes and the foreground have organic, abstract smaller pieces
- You should integrate pattern, probably through repetition
- Use a positive/negative somewhere on your piece
- The people in your piece should look like they are in movement
Here is the rubric for this assignment
Criteria 1: Did you create a piece of art that closely resembles the work of French artist Henri Matisse? Geometric shapes cover the background? Organic abstract shapes in the foreground? Repetition? Did you use the leaf motif or other organic shape? About circus, travel or entertainment?
Criteria 2: Quality: How well did you cut and glue down the colored paper? Do you have two pieces of paper that are the positive and the negative space of each other?
Criteria 3: Creativity: How much imagination went into the design of this piece? Is it unique, one-of-a-kind?
Criteria 4: Effort: Did you take the time to develop ideas and complete project? Didn't rush? Good use of class time?
Criteria 5: Did you use bright colors? Use a little black and white? Bodies that look like they are in movement?
We watch a few video clips of Cirque du Soleil for inspiration! They are fantastic performers!
